The Goya Awards is the great annual ceremony of Spanish Cinema where the best works of the film industry are awarded throughout the year. The first edition was held in 1987 at the Teatro Lope de Vega in Madrid.
The physical prize is a bust of Francisco de Goya and as a curiosity we will tell you that the first statuette that was delivered was a bronze bust weighing 15 kilos. Currently, the award is the same format but in a smaller size.
The Goya Awards began to be held as an imitation of the Oscars and after the great media impact of the first televised editions, audiences have been gradually declining. The Spanish Film Academy has tried to regain the public’s interest but they have been submerged in numerous controversies in recent years.
Goya Awards Date 2021
The Goya Gala 2021 will be held on March 6 at the Soho Theatre in Malaga but it will be a hybrid Gala adapting to the times of the covid-19. There will be two scenarios, on the one hand both the hosts of the gala and the protagonists of various performances will be in the emblematic theatre of Malaga.
On the other hand, the nominees for the Goya Awards 2021, will participate in the gala telematically.
Goya Awards Venue 2021
As we have already mentioned in the previous section, the gala will be held in the Capital of the Costa del Sol for the second consecutive year. Last year’s edition was one of the last multitudinous events to be held in our country, but in this case it was held at the Palacio de los deportes Martín Carpena.
It is curious that Malaga has repeated as the venue for two consecutive years, and this is partly due to the great role played by the Malaga-born Antonio Banderas in the Spanish film industry.
It will be the third consecutive year of the gala in Andalusian lands, since the 2019 edition was held in Seville.
The Spanish Film Academy has already confirmed that the headquarters of the awards next year 2022 will be held in Valencia.
Goya Awards 2021 presenters
Last year, the Gala was hosted by Andréu Buenafuente and Silvia Abril, one of the most influential couples in Spanish show business.
This year, the great protagonist will be the illustrious Malagueño Antonio Banderas, who will present the Gala from his hometown and where he spends long periods, accompanied by the presenter Maria Casado.
Goya Awards 2021 Covid
Obviously, the Gala will be marked by the pandemic, and the Academy of Spanish Cinema is going to try to reinvent itself with a hybrid format between a face-to-face part in the capital of Malaga and a telematic part with the winners of the gala.
According to the words of the President of the Film Academy, Antonio Barroso, they intend to reward and thank all the films that have been released during the year 202 in the face of difficulties and that have adapted to health measures.
One of the highlights will be the musical performances of Vanesa Martín and Aitana and it will also be a special celebration as Luis García Berlanga, the famous Valencian filmmaker, will be honoured, as 2021 is the centenary of his birth.
