Soho Malaga: discover a neighbourhood with magic

Soho district of Malaga

Surely you’ve ever wondered why everyone loves the Soho of Malaga. We are talking about both the theater and the neighborhood that gives its name to this particular area of the capital of Malaga.

What exactly is Soho in Malaga? Soho is a neighbourhood located in the Ensanche of Malaga and is home to the Contemporary Art Centre (CAC) and the historic Alameda Theatre. We are talking about a cultural and commercial area located practically in the center of Malaga, just a few minutes from the train station Maria Zambrano.

The locals call it the Barrio de las Artes and it is a perfect area to enjoy the urban, alternative art and the most creative and innovative cuisine in Malaga. Soho is the district of the city that has been most modernized in recent times and has also become one of the most visited areas. Not without reason.

At the end of the 2000s, the City Council of Malaga, the neighbors and merchants of Soho itself promoted the project Malaga Arte Urbano Soho. With it, they wanted to develop different cultural and artistic projects within the neighborhood. They wanted it to be the cultural lung of the capital of the Costa del Sol.

The idea was to reinforce the cultural offer with creative proposals of art, theatre, photography, video exhibitions, street markets, music… Whatever was needed to give Soho a more refined, alternative and cultural air. cultural. In fact, before this project could be completed, Soho had fallen into disrepair and neglect. It was not an area to visit in Malaga. However, it is now one of the liveliest neighbourhoods in the city.

In this way, urban art has taken over Soho for a few years now. Many urban artists have agreed to paint their work on walls and buildings, making the neighborhood look like a giant open-air museum. It’s also not uncommon to find graffiti murals everywhere. Of course, these graffiti are far from vandalism art and have a great artistic quality.

Undoubtedly, that is one of the great attractions of Soho. On the web page of Malaga Arte Urbano Soho there is a summary of the wide cultural offer that we can find in the neighborhood.

As soon as we arrive in Soho, we can see an example of all this urban art so striking and particular: murals by renowned artists such as Obey or D’Face invite us to continue and continue exploring.

Soho Málaga

Soho Theatre

The Soho Theatre is publicly known for being the space where the actor Antonio Banderas develops his theatrical project. But it is not a theatre created from scratch by the popular actor from Malaga.

The Soho Theatre of Malaga (as we know it today) was founded in the 1960s as the Alameda Theatre. Initially it was conceived to host opera plays in the city.

Already in 2017, Antonio Banderas acquired the space. The last play as Teatro Alameda took place in 2018. After that, the theater, which can hold almost 900 spectators, has been known as Soho Theater.
